GENERAL FESTIVAL FAQ

What’s “Do Something Reel” and how is it different from last year’s film festival?

Now in its third year, the Do Something Reel Film Festival (DSR) is a collection of provocative, character-driven films that focus on food, environmental issues and everyday people with a vision of making a world of difference.

This year, DSR will become an ongoing, digital film festival that will feature a different film each month. Films will be available for purchase online through these digital platforms: iTunes, Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video, Youtube VOD and Cinema Now.

Why are we doing it?

Our goal is to raise awareness of environmental and food issues, while supporting filmmakers who are inspiring people to question the impact our choices have on our health, body and environment. We're excited to use film and entertainment as a medium to raise awareness of ongoing environmental issues that can sometimes seem daunting. Caring for our environment is part of our mission, so this festival is really an example of our Core Values in action.

When does it start?

We will kick off this year's festival with a live event in Austin on Earth Day (April 22) followed by an interactive panel discussion that will be streamed live in the other select markets hosting in-theater events including: Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

After the initial kickoff, a different film will be launched on the first of each month.

Why is the festival online this year?

In the spirit of this eco-minded festival, transitioning to an online format allows us to share these films with a wider audience through in-home screenings. It's also convenient to enjoy at home — no commuting to a theater or worrying about showing times!

How do you select the films?

The films are selected because they educate and inspire people to ask questions and recognize the power of their purchasing decisions and everyday actions. We believe that these films help to raise awareness of issues that affect us all and we hope that by sharing these stories, we can create a dialogue about ways we can all make a difference.

How do I access/view the featured film(s)?

You will be able to find the films at dosomethingreel.com where you will be directed to whichever digital platform you prefer.

How much does it cost to watch a film?

Prices will vary each month, but never more than $4.99.

How do filmmakers apply for grants?

We will work with our partner, AFI Silverdocs, to offer an online grant application process that will be open from March 21, 2012 – May 4, 2012 on dosomethingreel.com.

Where do I go for more information, or to submit my film for consideration?
